On the 21st March, 2012 Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat made it clear at a press conference that Coleman would play the Doctor's companion alongside Matt Smith after Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill have left the show. Moffat selected her for the role because she is the most successful when working with Smith and spoke more quickly than Smith.
